We Are The Friends of Scott Joplin!
St Louis has a rich ragtime heritage. From the pioneering folk rags of Tom Turpin to the sophisticated classic ragtime of Scott Joplin... from the goundbeaking publishing house of John Stark and Son to the eye-opening historical research of Trebor Tichenor...from Tom Turpin's Rosebud Bar and the Booker T Washington Theater, to the Goldenrod Showboat and the New Rosebud Cafe, ragtime has always been an important part of the St Louis area, and for nearly a quarter-century the Friends of Scott Joplin has helped ensure that great ragtime music continues to be heard and enjoyed in the St Louis area.
Bryan Cather, President
Bryan Cather has made a name for himself in recent years as a thorough, meticulous and insightful historical researcher. Largely confining his ragtime research to the St Louis area, he is also a respected authority on player pianos and piano rolls, having authored a number of widely acclaimed articles on various roll and player related topics
Ethan Leinwand, Vice-President
Ethan Leinwand is a St. Louis-based barrelhouse blues pianist and preservationist. A student of the music’s rich history and varied regional styles, Ethan presents personal interpretations of many of the great (and forgotten) old-time masters. He specializes in St. Louis pre-war piano blues, Texas barrelhouse, Deep South barrelhouse, early Chicago boogie-woogie, and good-time hokum stride.
